Best Idol Performance, EVER?!

What's up, y'all? Ok, so there is no new American Idol news as of today. Most of my attention has been on the NCAA tournament. My bracket isn't doing so hot...I only got 12 right yesterday, but that's not terrible. I just have to win some big ones today. Anyway, what does that have to do with American Idol, you ask? Absolutely notta.

So, for your viewing pleasure, and my own curiosity, I am going to try something new (well I guess everything is new since this whole blog is new!). I want to know what you consider to be the best American Idol Performance EVER! Now, I'm not including this seasons performances thus far, mostly because "Ring of Fire" wouldn't get any love and Danny Gokey's "Jesus Take the Wheel...because my hands are F'in freezing which is why I have on this Artic Parka" would OBVIOUSLY win hands down....Bahahaha, yea right. We've had some very good performances from this year, but I'm just sticking to completed seasons. There is a poll on the right hand side of your screen, but as always, I'd like to hear your comments! Let me know if I've left out performances that you think deserve to be on this list.

Your American Idol Junkie,

Billy

Fantasia - Summertime

David Cook - Billie Jean

Jennifer Hudson - Circle of Life

Carrie Underwood - Alone

David Archuleta - Imagine

Clay Aiken - Bridge Over Troubled Water

Blake Lewis - You Give Love a Bad Name

David Cook - Always Be My Baby

Does anyone else hate the song Imagine?

David Cook, Always be my baby... live version. paula is right. This could be a movie soundtrack.

I found this particularly difficult - really.

Before I go on...I love the song "Imagine," Andrew. David Archuletta rocked it, too.

As far as the best performance, I think it's tough because there are so things to consider. For instance - Fantasia, although she can only seem to sing 'Baby Mama' these days, had a whole lot of passion and hit some good notes; Jennifer Hudson, though, has some pipes, which gave me chills a couple of times. Then there's David C. vs. David A. Our Mormon teen has one of the best voices, proving it with that Lennon song, but Cook's redention of Mariah's song was creative, new, and really fun to watch.

Billy, how come no Kelly? What about that old guy? (just kiddin')

For now, though, I'm gonna go with Cook's, but Archie and Baby Mama are real close.

No way, Andrew. "Imagine" is awesome. I recommend the Jack Johnson, stoned out surfer version.

This is hands down, David Cook "Always Be My Baby." Way to not include it in the poll, Billy. I know that it is sacrosanct in your mind because it is your girl's song but he rocked it that night.

Yeah, I'm gonna have to side with AJ and Brent on this one and say to Andrew: You lose. ;) I'm planning on responding with further opinion to this post later, but had to make it known how appalled I was at the first reply. (sorry Andrew...just my opinion=)) Maybe you've heard it too much or perhaps it doesn't have significant personal meaning like it does for me... but please give Imagine another chance...I'll post a video later tonight that will hopefully change your mind.

Ok everyone, I had to cancel the last poll and add a new one. Please revote, the 3 others of you that voted, haha. And no brent, it's not sacrosanct in my mind. It's actually my favorite performance on this list, I just didn't know if my liking of the song was swayed by my appreciation of the original artist. :)

Andrew...my post may have come off a little harsh...I have to understand that not everyone is going to love the things I love. If you don't like Imagine, though I cannot understand it, I can accept that it might not be something you like.

For those of you who do like the song...(and Billy I promise I'm not trying to turn this into a So You Think You Can Dance blog...maybe I should start one for myself though!) you might enjoy this.

Clearly, I'm a dance fanatic...This is a Paus de Deux (basically form of ballet) done to David A's version of "Imagine." Somebody liked it and choose his version instead of all the others.

As far as the best performance ever...

I agree with AJ that there should be some Kelly in there and I really love what David Cook did with "Billie Jean" but I think he busts it out more in his version of "Eleanor Rigby."

That being said,

Fantasia's performance was done very well. I LOVED her stylistics and the emotion she displayed; but there's something about her voice though that I don't absolutely fall down on the floor over. I'd personally choose Jennifer Hudson over Fantasia any day, and I thought Hudson displayed a more impressive set of pipes. I thought trying to sing "The Circle of Life" was gonna be really lame (even though Lion King is my fav!) but I thought she killed it. Very poised too.

I LOVE Carrie Underwood. I have a lot of respect for her as an artist and she can SANNNG. She is really gorgeous too and seems to have a realllly good head on her shoulders. I thought I was gonna vote for her at first from the simple fact that I think she's one of the best idols ever (right up there with the Kellster). However, after Allison's performance of ALONE(I know you said excluding this season) it made me realize Carrie's video wouldn't be in my contention for the best idol performance.

I LOVE the choir in Clay's performance but he himself did NOTHING for me. I don't really like the way he shapes some of his notes and until the end the performance (which was way too long) it just stayed in one boring range. Plus, he kinda cheated by bringing in an entire choir.

Cook's "Always Be My Baby" was a pleasant surprise and every entertaining...great vocals but didn't blow me away like some of his other performances (Billy Jean).

Blake is certainly a great performer and his version of "You Give Love a Bad Name" was really creative and entertaining but again, the vocals didn't blow me away.

I remember watching Archuleta and I think a circumstance in my life revolving around that song might make me quite biased to his performance. I also really liked the way he drew some notes out and changed up the original just a smige. His vocal quality seemed spot on to me and I don't recal any pitch problems. I also like that it was just him with very simple background music and very little backup vocals.

Right now I think I'm torn between Hudson, Cook and Archuleta on this one. Though, they were all pretty baller.

it was a difficult decision. ultimately i LOVE both David Cook songs. I felt I needed to give Billy Jean some love, since everyone is already acknowledging how amazing Always be my baby is!

Black girls can just sing. Fantasia and Jennifer Hudson's performances stood out to me, just because...dang, they can produce some sound. It's a toss up for me between those two.

I love the song "Imagine," and think Archulett'as performance was great too.

But I stand by my original statement. Black girls can just sing. Watch, Lil Rounds will be top 2 this season, if not the winner.

I'm formulating my reasons for my first comment. It should be posted by tomorrow evening.

Alright, the reason that I HATE the song "Imagine" by John Lennon can be found at here: http://thinkrightly.blogspot.com.

PS - This is nothing personal. I love all of you guys and have thoroughly enjoyed this blog.

So, as of right now, David Cook's "Always Be My Baby" just a hedge in front of his "Billie Jean." It seems as though these are the only two contenders to the throne?!? David Cood is the greatest American Idol we have ever seen?!? Hmmm...

Now, I also voted for "Always Be My Baby." Something about when the strings come in on the chorus completely amazes me everytime I listen to it and by the end of the song I am grinning like a goofball because it's so good. Even though his glory note falters a little bit, it doesn't matter, because the passion he is putting into it adds so much more to the song.

Now, this is my favorite performance. But after I voted I wondered if it truly was the "BEST EVER." If I did not let my favoritism factor in, I think I would say Fantasia's "Summertime" is the all around best performance. The emotion she put into that song, not to mention the near flawless vocals, was amazing. And not only that, SHE DID IT SITTING ON THE FLOOR! To sing that song the way she did was incredible.

I'm slightly surprised David Archuleta did not receive more love. His vocals on "Imagine" really are some of the best I've ever heard. I'm not interested in what song a contestant sings, just how they sing it (unless it's ubber cheese, Danny Gokey). You all should check out Andrews post on his blog as to why he hates the song. He makes some very good, well thought out points.

As for the others, Jennifer Hudson got the nod because she can straight out belt it. And it's amazing how effortless some of those notes are coming out...and how powerful. Carrie's "Alone" has been the standard that the judges hold EVERY contestant to when they sing that song, but they might have to change that after Allison's version this season. Carrie's sounded great, but it also sounded too "nice." Allison's rock edge MADE that song. Clay Aiken's "Bridge Over Troubled Waters" was great when he sang it...on season 2. Since then, other performance have pushed him down the list. And while Blake Lewis' performance might have been the most creative ever, this is a singing competition, not a beatbox comp. I was highly entertained, but his voice doesn't compare to the others'.

This poll is still not over, so spread the word so others can vote and make YOUR favorite performance the "BEST EVER!" Remember, Idol is airing on Wednesday and Thursday this week...thanks prez.

While the David Cook song is a better overall song, and i would listen to it more on the radio, the Archuletta performance, in that specific moment watching it live on TV, was the best one I've ever seen on the show.

billy - just thought you might want to consider bo bice's in a dream performance. i chose summertime by fantasia in your poll, but bo's rendition of in a dream also gave me chills. hope you're well!
